Home Media Magazine - Hollywood Goes High-Def - September 2008 - (Page hghd5) fourth-quarter blowout Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! Ralph Tribbey, editor of industry tip sheet The DVD Release Report, said studios are blowing through their top theatrical releases from the past 10 years on Blu-ray. “The film elements are better and easier to work with in high-def,” Tribbey said. He said with standard DVD rapidly approaching commodity pricing ($17.08 for catalog movies), Blu-ray thus far has retained its premium pricing at $33.06 per title, up 3 cents from last year. “We’ve had an exceptionally good summer in terms of depth and breadth of films,” Tribbey said. “I haven’t seen anything yet anybody has ignored. As fast as they are launching the press releases, all are for Blu-ray and DVD. I expect that trend to continue through the end of the year.” Lionsgate releases its first title featuring BD Live Sept. 9 with The Forbidden Kingdom. In addition to the multiple bonus featurettes, bloopers, deleted scenes and commentaries found on both the two-disc BD and DVD editions, the martial arts action film with Jackie Chan and Jet Li includes a Web-enabled interactive movie blog tool set on the BD Live version. Additional Blu-ray releases from Lionsgate include Universal Soldier and Monster’s Ball, both Nov. 4. Among Blu-ray releases in the fourth quarter, The Walt Disney Co.’s re-issue of venerable classic Sleeping Beauty Oct. 7, featuring the studio’s first BD Live experience, is notable for the breadth of actual interactive components. With its Men in Black Blu-ray release, Sony was the first studio to incorporate BD Live with a community-based video game, considered by many integral to Blu-ray’s cachet. Now Disney expands the user’s experience beyond commentaries, GPS and games. “BD Live is what makes Blu-ray relevant in the age of the Web,” Zane Vella, president of Related Content Database Inc., whose company works with studios such as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and consumer electronics companies such as Panasonic to bring advanced BD Live features to Blu-ray discs and devices. “Some of the most exciting things coming this fourth quarter are BD Live features that connect consumers’ home theater experiences in ways that only the Internet has been able to do before.” Sleeping Beauty’s Movie Mail lets users record personalized video messages, superimpose them into pre-selected movie clips, and send to a friend, colleague or relative. Other BD Live features on this release are Movie Chat, which lets viewers chat using any text-enabled device such as a laptop, desktop, PDA device, iPhone or cell phone, and Movie Challenge, which tests viewers’ skills against other players. Disney Movie Rewards Live lets Bluray owners accumulate reward points and redeem them for exclusive studio interviews with actors and/or producers, exclusive new trailers, wallpapers, ring tones, avatars and other items. “It is apparent that there is a perfect storm lining up for the Blu-ray format this fourth quarter,” said Lori MacPherson, GM of North America for Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. In addition to Horton, Fox Home Entertainment will street The Happening, Meet Dave, Space Chimps and The XFiles: I Want to Believe. No dates for the titles have been announced.
