Other Fox BD releases include Deception, coming Sept. 23 with the exclusive BD featurette “A Passionate Process: Dissecting the Deception,” and Young Frankenstein, due Oct. 7 with picturein-picture featuring all-new on-camera interviews with Mel Brooks, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman and others. The Planet of the Apes: 40-Year Evolution Collection (Nov. 4) features specific Bluray bonus content, including an unrated version of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes previously not released in the United States, featuring eight minutes of unrated footage. The “Science of the Apes” Bonus View feature includes scientists, anthropologists and sociologists discussing the facts and fiction of the first film. Each “Apes” sequel also has an isolated score track in 5.1 DTS Master Audio. “For the first time, consumers will see at market the full pallette of compelling features that Blu-ray offers,” said Mary Daily, EVP, North America marketing, for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. “We’re readying some of our biggest new-release and best-selling catalog titles for Blu-ray, as is the industry, to drive adoption with consumers looking to maximize their investment in a highdefinition home theater system.” With an impressive string of summer box-office triumphs such as The Incredible Hulk, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Mamma Mia!, Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s fourth-quarter Blu-ray slate is red hot and geared to hit the high-def sweet spot, according to Craig Kornblau, president of USHE and Universal Pictures Digital Platform. Catalog fare slated for Blu-ray in Q4 includes American Gangster and Casino in September, followed by Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Hulk (Ang Lee’s 2003 version) in October. “It’s a powerful combination that we believe will not only set the bar for future fourth-quarter blowout Blu-ray releases, but that will put these Blu-ray discs on the top of a lot of holiday shopping lists,” Kornblau said. Lexine Wong, senior EVP of worldwide marketing for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, reiterated the importance of Blu-ray in the fourth quarter. While not divulging specifics, she said the studio will street its biggest summer titles on Blu-ray, including You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, Hancock, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express and The House Bunny, as well as more specialized releases with higher The Godfather prices such as the complete TV series sets of “I Dream of Jeannie,” “NewsPlanet of the Apes Radio,” “Sanford and Son” and other popular shows, as well as holiday-themed family fare such as This Christmas and The Perfect Holiday. (For a further listing of Q4 Blu-ray releases, See page 18.) Elaborate DVD and Blu-ray Disc editions of Casablanca and the venerated animated “Flintstones” TV series top fourth-quarter releases from Warner Home Video. “We’re looking to bring our collections to a new level in the fourth quarter,” said Jeff Baker, Warner’s EVP and GM of theatrical catalog. “We’ve been very encouraged by the tremendous success of last year’s Blade Runner: Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which came in a briefcase, and the ‘Harry Potter’ collection, with all five movies in a collectible trunk. It’s quite apparent that our consumers appreciate these premium-priced gift sets, especially the rich content and memorabilia.” The Warner lineup includes How the West Was Won, on Sept. 9; Sex and the City, Sept. 23; Beetlejuice: 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, Oct. 7; Poltergeist and The Ultimate Matrix Collection, Oct. 14; A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector’s Edi- tion, Nov. 4; Chuck: The Complete First Season, Harry Potter Years 1-5 Giftset, Quo Vadis and JFK: Ultimate Collector’s Edition, Nov. 11; Superman Doomsday, Nov. 25; and Casablanca: Ultimate Collector’s Edition Dec. 2. Summit Home Entertainment for the holidays is distributing two musical compilation titles on Blu-ray, America the Beautiful and The Yule Log. “This holiday season is important in establishing the BD format as the highdefinition source for consumers,” said Steve Nickerson, president of Summit. “It is the first holiday with a single format and also the last holiday season before the digital TV broadcast transition, which creates great potential for hardware and software sales.” Not to be outdone, adult supplier Digital Playground (DP) has earmarked 31 titles for release in Blu-ray in the fourth quarter, including the highly anticipated sequel Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge, filmed entirely in high-def. “Our Blu-ray shipments have been increasing at a rate of 20% a month since we started a year ago,” said Joone, Pirates director and co-founder of Los Angelesbased DP. Image Entertainment Inc. will street 14 titles on Blu-ray in the fourth quarter, including Caligula Nov. 4, Hollywood’s infamous adult mainstream movie starring Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and Peter O’Toole.
