Witek, ART DIRECTOR . . . . . . . . . . . . awitek@questex.com Into the blogosphere Our new way to connect H ow do you get your information? Depending upon your age, background, personality type—and myriad other factors—the answer might be magazines, newspapers, television, radio, websites, email newsletters, blogs, or even that old standby, word of mouth. More than likely, your own personal answer is a combination of these. In the past, our job as b2b magazine editors was simpler in many ways. We would faithfully report on and analyze the latest news in our industry and package that information intelligently in the form of a print magazine that we would mail to you. Many editors are comfortable with that practice and resist the changes inherent in the Web and taking content online. But as journalists, we should be excited about this change—instead of another task, I view it as change in the form of new opportunities to reach readers. It isn’t our job to force you to get your information in a particular way. We should be open to the different ways that you may want to stay up-to-date on the lodging industry. So, it’s in that spirit that I’m proud to unveil our newest online information source, the HotelTalk blog. For those not familiar with the word blog, it’s a term that comes from shortening the phrase web log. Blogs are online sites where a person or group of people (the bloggers) post occasional comments about whatever strikes them on that particular day. Usually, posts are made multiple times per week. Blogs are generally opinion-based, newsy, casual, feature a lot of links to other sites and often show a good bit of personality from their authors. Readers of the blog can submit comments to any of the posts for everyone to read. So, they’re certainly a two-way street and serve as a popular way to have a public conversation (or debate) online. Well, what does that mean for you? What good is a blog about hotel financing, real estate and other issues? I think it will serve several purposes. It will give our entire team the chance to chat about relevant topics in a less formal setting. That, in itself, will hopefully start some interesting discussions with you, our readers. It will also give you the chance to “meet” and connect with the very talented and hard-working editorial team that we’ve put together on the HotelWorld Network. And lastly, it will allow us to see what issues strike you as important and worth discussing on a more regular basis. Yes, our editors are constantly out in the field at investment conferences and shows. But we should never pause in our efforts to keep current with this industry, and I want to ensure that we’re discussing what you want to hear about. Feedback from the blog may well influence future content—whether that translates onto our printed properties, an electronic format or something else that hasn’t even been invented yet. Please join us at www.hotelmotel.com/ HotelTalk. I look forward to having you start in on the conversation.
