The Hotel Times - September 2008 - (Page 6) IN THE NEWS Global sales down so far in ’08 Growth expectations still high for Moscow J ones Lang LaSalle Hotels reported $13.9 billion worth of hotels traded globally in the first half of 2008. This is a 76-percent decline from the first half of 2007. The Americas recorded the highest drop (-81 percent) followed by Asia Pacific (-67 percent) and Europe, the Middle East and Asia (-59 percent). Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels’ global CEO, Arthur de Haast, said the company remains “cautiously optimistic about the future of hotel investments over the medium term,” and that the $13.9 billion represents a level comparable to transaction volume in the first half of 2004, which came in at $14 billion [See chart below]. Further, JLLS Hotels reported hotel investor sentiment in the EMEA region is cautious. According to the company’s “Hotel Investor Sentiment Survey,” earlier turbulence this year in the financial markets led to a period of declining returns from hotel real estate in the EMEA region. The UK provincial market is the most affected, but historically strong performers London, Madrid and Barcelona are unlikely to escape a downturn. Trading growth expectations still remain high for Moscow, Istanbul, Dubai, Munich, Berlin and Rome, the study reported.
