Luxury Hotelier - April 2008 - (Page 28) 28| Inspire Pleasure principles Thoughtful and integrative design is a key element of the successful spa experience T he two-floor Health Spa at the Four Seasons Hong Kong (www. fourseasons.com/hongkong) was designed to relax and rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit. The intricately detailed sanctuary features 18 marble treatment rooms, all of which include private bathrooms. A few of them feature vitality pools and experience showers. Two harbor-facing spa suites offer a couples vitality pool, relaxation day beds, a flat-screen LCD television and a private bar of healthy snacks and herbal refreshments. The spa was designed to convey a distinctive international tone with an ambiance of high culture and luxury, says Bernie Himel, managing director, Wilson Associates Singapore, designer of the spa. “It is ahead of the curve in many ways,” he says. “We were able to integrate the spa’s complex treatments and services into the design. The therapies are enhanced through the custom-made and custom-tailored, color-coded lights from the paneling above and below. Each suite has glass panel heated flooring. We are addressing the five senses to make sure the guest has an ultimate experience.” Designer Daniela Steiner has created an eponymous spa brand with 10 locations worldwide including one at the Hotel & Spa Rosa Alpina (www.rosaalpina.it/). The Relais & Chateaux property is set in a tiny mountain village in the Dolomites of Italy. The spa comprises more than 5,000 square feet with 12 treatment rooms, indoor pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. Each treatment room features hand-painted frescoes for an intimate environment where guests can enjoy natural treatments that incorporate regional herbs and flowers. “Our basic treatments have to be the same at every property,” Ms. Steiner says. “For each property we create two special treatments made with natural local ingredients. At Rosa Alpina, they are the Essences of the Dolomites bath and body treatment, and the Wild Flowers mountain hay body wrap.” Asked about the importance of luxury hotels offering on-site spas, Ms. Steiner says: “It makes the experience of a resort destination complete. It complements the other amenities.” HOTEL & SPA ROSA ALPINA » BY PATRICIA SHEEHAN PHOTO BY ROBERT MILLER FOUR SEASONS HONG KONG Cole Martinez Curtis and Associates designed the RockResort Spa at the Keystone (Colo.)
