Luxury Hotelier - April 2008 - (Page 4) 4| Editor’s Letter Our bags are packed 757 Third Ave., 5th floor, New York, NY 10017 USA R ight around the time our February issue came out, the LUXURY HOTELIER team was in Las Vegas, celebrating the launch of our first trade show, Hotel World Expo & Conference. It was an excellent chance for us to meet many of our readers. The most well-attended sessions were those we had planned for the luxury hoteliers at the show. Maybe I’m biased, but the panel I moderated on trends in luxury hotel restaurant concepts seemed like a hit. Audience members tossed questions to the panelists and vice versa, and the group debated concepts like locovore eating, flexible dining room design and kitchen architecture. It goes with the territory for our team to frequently travel to Las Vegas, and it’s always interesting for me to see how the city mixes high and low. The new Palazzo Resort-Hotel-Casino property, from Las Vegas Sands Corp., fits in right next to its sister The Venetian. As far as more luxury development goes, we’re keeping a special eye on MGM Mirage’s CityCenter, touted as the most expensive privately funded construction project in the Western hemisphere. Interesting to note about Las Vegas is that only four properties on the Strip hold five-diamond status: Bellagio, Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, Skylofts at the MGM Grand Hotel and Wynn Las Vegas. A fifth, The Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas, is in the luxury enclave by the same name about 20 minutes outside of the hustle and bustle. The newest Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas is poised to follow suit. Senior editor Stacey Mieyal Higgins had the chance in Las Vegas to sit down with the executive team of The Donald’s newest project (see story on page 24 and photo below) and tour the property as staff prepared for the March 31 opening. Then, on the heels of HotelWorld, some of our team flew directly to Berlin for the annual International Hotel Investment Forum. Check out page 14 for some photos of that event, which has quickly become a staple on the international conference circuit. Where should we go next? Suggestions always are welcome.
