While luxury means many things to many people, the staff of LUXURY HOTELIER has deduced that the hotel industry’s definition of luxury is quite straightforward: taking care of guests as if they were your closest friends. When we set out to create a magazine to help luxury hotel owners, operators and developers learn more about their passion, we wanted to touch on as many points as possible while making new friends along the way. This inaugural issue of LUXURY HOTELIER is a starting point for a journey that will take our readers around the globe. Our aim is to include as much information as possible while offering a glimpse into the minds of luxury hoteliers. First, we adopted the tagline “Protocols, Properties, Personalities.” Each issue you will find articles focused on the issues, hotels and people that make the luxury hotel market the unique sector that it is. In our premiere issue we carefully chose timely topics to live up to our tagline: N Protocols: “Greener luxury” on page 48. N Properties: London’s Lanesborough on page 32 and Paris’ Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière on page 38. N Personalities: Isadore Sharp of Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts on page 18. Second, we established the magazine’s pillars. Much like the majestic columns that stabilize many luxury hotels, our pillars will serve as the backbone of LUXURY HOTELIER. In each issue you will find: N Inspire. This section is about design, and we kick it off with spa design (page 40). N Deliver. Operations are a large part of every hotel, and we’ll address key topics that affect luxury hotels’ ability to make their guests’ stay memorable. On page W 44, you’ll learn more about music options. N Innovate. Technology plays a larger role in hotels every day. In this issue, we explore wireless networks (page 56). N Indulge. Unique food-and-beverage presentations often make the difference in a guest’s stay. On page 62, kitchen equipment is sampled—you can even find out what equipment top chefs want in their kitchens. N Connect. Marketing means money, and after all, that is the bottom line for hoteliers. E-marketing and holiday room packages are the topics of choice this issue (page 66). In between, you’ll find plenty of information that we hope helps you enhance the performance and presentation of your property. You’ll also learn about new development, people on the move and the news of the day. In addition, we have some of the most respected names sharing their insights, including Smith Travel Research/ The Bench, Ypartnership and Cornell University. We hope to sprinkle in some fun, with pages like our “Dossier” on page 72, which lets you take a peek at some of the latest trends luxury hoteliers enjoy. Maria Razumich-Zec of The Peninsula Chicago is the first to offer her thoughts and tastes. Like a new neighbor on the block, we want to earn your friendship. It’s hard not to think of Isadore Sharp as a friend after spending some time with him at Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts’ headquarters outside Toronto. The affable Mr. Sharp clearly is comfortable with his life and what his company represents. The lasting impressions from my two days at Four Seasons headquarters: The respect Mr. Sharp has for human beings and the adoration he has for his wife, Rosalie.
