Luxury Travel Advisor - February 2008 - (Page 4) PUBLISHER'S LETTER LUXURY T R AV E L A D V I S O R jmcmahon@questex.com rterrero@questex.com llambert@questex.com It's All in the Attitude s I stand in a long line waiting to go through U.S. Customs at Nassau International Airport in the Bahamas, I suddenly find myself with time on my hands to think of what to write for this issue’s Publisher’s Letter. I would typically expect to be angry and upset standing in a long line, but, in this particular situation, I can’t drum up those feelings. As I depart this destination, the only emotion I can evoke is one of utter contentedness. Why? It’s all about the Bahamian people. During my brief visit, I must have been in contact with more than 100 local denizens who have demonstrated to me the best attitudes that I’ve ever seen in all my world travels. What’s their overwhelming demeanor here? Why, it’s almost as if they’ve all just won the Lotto—and that goes for everyone, from the taxi drivers to the hotel staff. By the way, my resort of choice was The Cove Atlantis (where I'm pictured). Let me tell you, from the inside out, this hotel is hip-luxury at its best. I generally advise that a property should be designed to attract either families or couples, not both. But The Cove has pulled it off with its family pool area and its separate adults-only pool, which has a real South Beach feel. I also stopped by Compass Point for a site inspection. This resort is also in the hipluxury category, but with more of an Out Island, casual feel to it. It’s definitely the place to relax. Overall, the Bahamas is seeing quite a surge in upscale and luxury projects. Of course, One&Only Ocean Club has long been one of the top picks for affluent travelers in this destination, and now it will be joined by The Ritz-Carlton, Rose Island, Bahamas, which will debut in 2010 four miles off Nassau and Paradise Island. It will be set on a 230-acre enclave, which will eventually include a marina for yachts, estate homes, condominiums and townhouses. Also in the works is a $4 billion Grand Bahama Island project that will be about three times the current size of Atlantis and have many of the same amenities. Already open is the Powell Pointe Resort at Cape Eleuthera, which is part of the new $85 million Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club. If these new projects are staffed by folks who are similar in their attitudes to the wonderful people I’ve met this week, I’m sure they’ll be an instant success. Now, on to clearing customs!
