(Note: A 20-treatment-room spa opens in March.) Set in Perthshire, Scotland, Gleneagles was designed to resemble a French château. The 850-acre property, which is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, is currently owned and operated by Diageo, the makers of Guinness and Johnnie Walker (which are available in abundance at the hotel). Yet all of that belies the hotel’s affable ambiance—the only thing we found stiff about Gleneagles was the starchy cloth napkins at The Strathearn Restaurant. Everything else—from the witty staff to the playful Black Labra- Scotland’s famous country estate is a wonderland of sports and sophistication. dors in Gleneagles’ new Gundog School—screams of a luxuriously good time. We stayed in the Tom Browne Suite, one of Gleneagles’ 10 new Spirit Suites, situated on the top floor of the hotel. Decorated in soothing blues, grays, blacks and browns, this posh abode overlooks the entrance to Gleneagles. With the sitting room located in the middle, book-ended by the two bedrooms and baths, we found it was large enough for two people to get lost in. In fact, the space more than met our needs, but insiders say the top suite to book is the split-level Blue Tower suite, which offers two large bedrooms, two baths and a spiral staircase that leads to the sitting room. The Royal Lochnagar, featuring one bedroom, two bathrooms and a sitting room, also is a preferred suite to book.
