I was glad to see so many of you at our Luxury Travel Expo and the many other events I attended. Our business is travel, and there is no substitute for experiencing destinations and meeting the people to whom you will entrust your clients. I had the opportunity this winter to travel to Europe, the Caribbean and the east and west coasts of the United States, and I must say the airlines seemed to be handling the increased demand much better. I know many of your clients this winter were looking to escape the cold, as well they should. I, on the other hand, took my annual winter trip to Vail. Pictured with me below are Ian Arthur, vice president of sales and marketing for Vail and Beaver Creek, and Gabe Shalley, airline marketing manager, Vail and Beaver Creek, my hosts for the weekend. This resort continues to reinvent itself, as all world-class destinations do. Currently the Lions Head section of Vail is being upgraded, and the Arrabelle at Vail Square, run by Rock Resorts, just opened. This resort anchors the redevelopment with its five-diamond-caliber service, butlers and all. I also hit the slopes with Kathleen Walinsky, general manager of Snow Cloud Lodge, another new addition to the Vail community. Perfect for those looking for a new option in Bachelor Gulch, Snow Cloud Lodge is conveniently located next to The Ritz-Carlton, where guests enjoy pool and hot tub privileges. This condo experience is great for families that need room to spread out. I, on the other hand, stayed at Vail Cascade Resort just outside of the village. Among my favorite features of the resort, a Destination Hotels & Resorts property, are a dedicated lift that puts you on mid-mountain Vail in a few minutes, its ski-in, ski-out location and its world-class spa. You could take my word for it, but I can think of a couple of better ways for you to find out more about Vail Resorts: Contact Olga Griffin (ogriffin@vailresorts. com) to arrange site inspections, or come out to Luxury Travel Expo next winter to visit with representatives from Vail Resorts and many other destinations. The reality is that a slow-down in travel could be upon us, and you, as luxury travel advisors, need to put yourself where this economic downturn will be least felt—at exclusive destinations where the ultra-affluent go to play. These are not simple bookings, and your destination expertise is a necessity.
