Luxury Travel Advisor - August 2007 - (Page 34) HOTELS Little Dix Bay, A Rosewood Resort Little Dix Bay, A Rosewood Resort (www.littledixbay.com) completed a massive five-year renovation in January, so we ventured to Virgin Gorda, the easternmost of the British Virgin Islands, to see what the resort’s rebirth entailed. Accommodations have been expanded with the addition of 16 Rosewood Junior Suites and three Hilltop Villas (three bedrooms, private pools), while each of the resort’s 100 existing guest rooms and suites was refurbished with new bathrooms, fabrics and furnishings. The new Hilltop Villas are top of the lot and are perfectly suited for a family gathering or a high-profile client whose priority is privacy; they’re pre-stocked with guests’ preferred food items and beverages and are serviced by a Villa Concierge, and each is provided with a golf cart for maneuvering the resort’s grounds. Note: Some guests might find the villas’ hilltop setting off-putting in terms of getting down to the beach, but one villa guest told us that the daily golf cart rides to and from were his kids’ favorite part of their stay. Alternatively, two Beachfront Villas, Minton House and Dover House, afford similar privacy and space. They’re also conveniently close to the secluded spa. Note: Villas require a five-night stay. If you’re looking to book something slightly pared down but no less luxurious, opt for a Rosewood Junior Suite. Our favorites were numbers 101-108 for their sprawling porches with plush lounge furniture, as well as jaw-dropping beach and landscape views and central location—the pool, pavilion dining room, bar and beach are steps away. We were also impressed by the suites’ spacious bathrooms, which give way to outdoor garden showers. Similar in size, One-bedroom Suites are right on the beach and have separate living and bedroom areas. When booked in multiples with connecting options, Beachfront and Ocean Cottages ably host families; booked individually, rooms in the Cottage category are best for one or two guests, as the studio-style floor plan consists of one open living/sleeping space and a separate bathroom. The dramatic, oceanfront arrival at Little Dix Bay is part of the resort’s charm, so advise clients to consider the resort’s “Land and Water” transfer; they’ll fly into Tortola, then take a 12-minute ferry ride directly to the resort’s jetty. Alternatively, guests can opt for a small charter plane from St. Thomas (a 10-minute flight or 75minute water taxi) into Virgin 34 LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | August 2007 http://www.littledixbay.com
