I just came from American Airlines Terminal 9 at John F. Kennedy Airport, and you would have thought that a plague had hit New York City and everyone was trying to get out. In Times Square, people are 10 deep trying to cross the street, and it now takes several changes of the lights to make it across. As luxury travel advisors, we need to prepare our clients for the rough roads ahead and try to instill patience and kindness in their minds as they deal with these obstacles. In the past month I have run into some very angry people, and I have tried to kill them with kindness, if only to make them more upset—we all know that angry travelers hate to see happy travelers. Our cover subject this month is Anne Morgan Scully, someone who I have gotten to know very well over the course of the years, and someone who exemplifies the attitude we all should maintain. She is always happy, and her positive attitude is contagious. You can’t help feeling good while in her presence. After reading her story, you’ll want to adopt some of her best practices, and you’ll end up having fun along the way. In closing, here’s a true and funny story. Recently I was in McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas waiting for my delayed flight out when an announcement came over the loudspeaker stating the following: “A set of false teeth and a hearing aid were found in the men’s room. If you lost these items and can hear this message, please go to the information desk.” Thousands of mad and happy travelers laughed out loud together for a short period of time. It was one of the magical John McMahon and Anne Morgan Scully moments of the year.
