Luxury Travel Advisor - September 2007 - (Page 24) FERRAGAMO’S PORTRAIT SUITES’ rooftop terrace offers spectacular views (right). HOTEL BYRON suites are elegantly appointed and have Art Deco furniture (bottom). duplex; upstairs is the big bedroom, a small living room and a wraparound terrace with postcard views of the center of Rome. The bath, with a huge shower and sauna, is down a flight of stairs. For a second bedroom and bath, book the adjacent Studio Deluxe room as well. Room 31 is a regular suite; the drawback here is the very narrow living room, though the big bedroom does make up for it. Plus, there are two walk-in closets, a three-way mirror to check for lasagna bulge, a marble bath with shower and an “angolo kitchen,” a kind of closet that opens to reveal a full kitchen. We loved the rooftop terrace, which has a fireplace for snuggling up on a cool night and spectacular views of both the Spanish Steps and Rome’s famous wedding cake monument, the Vittorio Emanuele. Hidden down a narrow street in Parioli, in a neighborhood filled with locals, diplomats and expats, is the venerable Lord Byron (www.lordbyronhotel.com), an elegant villaturned-hotel. The outstanding collection of Art Deco furniture reflects the elegant style of hospitality in the 1930s, but the 32-room hotel is very “today.” General Manager Marco Crea and his associate Millita Malvak will work with clients to provide extra-special services. The best suite, number 603, is a favorite because of its large private wraparound terrace, providing a wide view of Villa Borghese park and the rooftops of Rome. (Insiders tell us that Madonna and Sting have hidden out here.) Suite 602 is similar and has window views, but no terrace; both are decorated with wine-colored carpet, rich green walls and white marble bathrooms. Tip: For a group seeking discretion and tranquility, book 603, 602 and the adjacent Double Classic room 601, the only rooms on the sixth floor. Downstairs, Suite 503 has a balcony and private living room, similar to Suite 603, but without the terrace. For a single person, Double Deluxe room 202 is a plush hideaway, perfect for chilling out after a long day. Though small, it has a king-sized bed, a marble bathroom and a garden view. Insider secret: The owners of the Lord Byron are now refurbishing an old palazzo on Rome’s Via Veneto and will introduce their boutique hotel, to be called 155 Via Veneto, in 2008. 24 LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | September 2007 http://www.lordbyronhotel.com
