Wow— how fast things move. On the other hand, Tiffany’s just reported an increase in sales. What does this say? It tells you that the affluent may be feeling the pinch, but still aren’t sacrificing the good things in life. The travel industry is being tested, yes. A downturn in travel has not occurred since 9/11 and the questions is, “Have priorities changed for the affluent traveler?” For Europeans, taking vacation is non-negotiable. Since 9/11, I have seen the American market start to act like the Europeans’. We have reset our priorities, family has taken center stage and we have been told time away from work is a good thing. So, it should be interesting to see how it all unfolds. My prediction, based on talking to the readers of Luxury Travel Advisor, is that, yes, travel attitudes have changed, but luxury travel will hold strong. That doesn’t mean we should sit back. You need to act swiftly, navigate the turns and know when to speed up or slow down. If you have a lot of clients that are in the finance sector, start diversifying and looking into other industries. I recently spent a weekend in Napa Valley with Bill Karris (above, first from left) of Palms Place, the successful luxury resort at The Palms, Las Vegas. George Maloof, owner of The Palms along with his siblings, capitalized on his entertainment connections to build this high-end resort. What was I doing in Napa with Bill? The Palms sponsors an Indy race car and we attended the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma. Now that’s navigating a business! So, go zig and zag your business through these uncertain times.
