I enjoy networking with peers who have roles in industries I am unfamiliar with: beauty, fashion and entertainment, to name a few. During one conversation, I found myself discussing the changing economy—a topic at the forefront of everyone’s mind. A fellow marketer mentioned that we have to find the tools and techniques to keep ourselves ahead of the curve. Throughout the evening, that topic resonated. I was speaking with an associate at one of the large fragrance houses about launching new product lines. It made me think about my own plans for Luxury Travel Expo and it sparked an idea for our 10th anniversary. We discussed many topics: science, marketing, sales, finance and other departments that come into play when launching a new fragrance. One that struck a chord with me was knowing your clients and forecasting their needs. Simply: How does one manage such a task? Ask questions, such as: Who is your audience? What are their likes and dislikes? Have they ever owned a Dior accessory? Are they obsessed with movie memorabilia? Do they spend weekends dining at upscale restaurants? Really get to know your clients and what makes them tick. It isn’t only about the hottest destination, the newest five-star resort or even the most luxurious amenity available; it is really getting to know their lifestyle. Use things you learn about them to spice up the itineraries you plan. Provide them with a list of the must-visit shops in the French Riviera, the delicious little corner enoteca in Rome or even the hottest Broadway show in New York. These extensions of the typical travel itinerary will allow you to foster a lasting, long-standing relationship with your clients.
