Luxury Travel Advisor - December 2007 - (Page 15) HOTEL HEINITZBURG‘s Double Deluxe Rooms open onto a sunny lawn (room 7 is shown here). whose cuisine is an innovative twist on Cape Malay, Thai and traditional Namibian), our own ranger (Dean is affable and knowledgeable) and our own pool. Tip: Namibian swimming pools are almost always really cold, due to evaporation in the desert air. What do we love? A portion of the net profit from hospitality at Okonjima goes to the Hanssen family’s AfriCat Foundation (www.africat.org), the cheetah and leopard rescue and release program. Founded by Namibian Albi Bruckner in the 1990s, NamibRand Nature Reserve (www. namibrand.com) is rated one of the top 20 destinations in Africa. Within this endless landscape of desert, dune and shifting light are the camps at Wolwedans (www. wolwedans.com). Exclusive and remote, this elegant group of safari camps celebrates the red sands and craggy mountains of the Namib Desert. We discovered that the rule here is seclusion, with a guest density of one bed for every 5,000 acres of land. Yet, a European-trained chef and a wine cellar that’s hidden under the dunes add to the civilized safari experience. The property’s manager, Jergen (264-63-69-3730), takes excellent care of his guests. The Wolwedans Private Camp is a sumptuous villa designed for the couple seeking personal rejuvenation in complete privacy. Solitude, luxury and total seclusion are the by-words here. Open only from March 15 to December 15, the house combines wood and canvas to blend into the desert valley sands and silvery grasses. All services can be provided, including a personal chef and a private field guide and vehicle. Wolwedans is reachable by private aircraft or car. For a larger group, the Mountain View Lodge is a smaller private house set away from the series of eight luxury desert chalets at Wolwedans Dune Camp, perched along the top of one of the famed red dunes. We thought The Mountain View Lodge to be the perfect honeymoon or getaway house, with one big bedroom with roll-up walls, a large bathroom, kitchen and living room. The house comes equipped with its own chef (trained by Stefan Bruckner and former head chef Rolf at their fabulous new facility in Windhoek), but clients may join the other guests at the Dune Camp for meals if they wish. Stefan Bruckner has just finished construction of Boulders Camp, a remote cluster of luxury tented chalets where guests will have every service and complete privacy.
