THE ALLUVIAN HOTEL GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI The Viking Stove Company produces its high-end appliances in the Mississippi Delta, where the air is thick with the Blues and Southern ambience. To offer discriminating cooks and worldwide distributors the opportunity to come to Greenwood to visit its high-tech factory, Viking morphed an old flophouse in this formerly moribund town into a luxury, contemporary property, The Alluvian Hotel (www.theal luvian.com). The Alluvian opened in 2003 and is more chic than one might expect from a hotel in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. Its rooms are done in tones of eggplant and lime and are stocked with pillows to get lost in, along with Aveda amenities. There are BY SHARRI WHITING DE MASI 45 rooms and five suites—each of the suites features a whirlpool bath and rooms are well laid out and comfortable. Ask Front Desk Manager Kelvin Scott (thealluvi anhotel@alluvian.com; 662-4532114) for a suite with a stainless-steel fireplace, or Suite 206, with a private terrace. The hotel does not have a concierge, but all front-desk personnel are ready to help with restaurant reservations and local information. On the lobby level, we settled in at the big lounge/piano bar, where both locals and visitors meet for drinks and music.
