It seems to keep getting better, doesn’t it? The affluent travel market continues to mature and the products we sell continue to raise the bar in luxury. For me, December is a time to reflect and give thanks, and the best way to do that is to give back. I recently spoke with Anne Morgan Scully of McCabe World Travel, who believes the biggest challenge is staying in touch with clients. You might say, “Why not just pick up the phone and call?” Anne was getting at the need to continually create ways of staying in touch with clients that motivate them to travel while also keeping them loyal. Of course, Anne was full of great ideas on this topic. At the time, I had none. Then it came to me. Around the holidays I hear about the great things many of you do to help those in need. Priscilla Alexander hosted a holiday event at a local hospital for needy children. Most of you know Micato Safaris, but you may not know about its nonprofit arm, AmericaShare, which works to support adults and orphaned children affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Next year I’d like to publish more examples of travel professionals giving back, so drop me an e-mail with your efforts. I recently visited the Arizona Biltmore, which is now part of the Waldorf=Astoria Collection. There, I met Kim Westhoff, director of luxury accounts (pictured with me here). For years, Kim and I have shared our passion for the same charity, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. When I meet people like Kim, I feel they always will be successful in business because of their generosity. One way to ensure this is to communicate your charitable efforts to clients. Affluent people are largely about giving back and if they see that you do as well, you will gain a client for life. So keep up the charitable work and enjoy the holiday.
