Luxury Travel Advisor - December 2008 - (Page 30) HOTELS THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE is a warm display of color and whimsical charm. ST. REGIS Singapore Open a scant six months, The St. Regis Singapore (www.stregis. com) is already receiving the type of awards it usually takes years for a hotel to acquire. In a world where hotels seem to be trying to outdo each other with a Zen-like sparseness, this property instead uses bold color and museum-quality art to create an opulent sense of place. When we say museum-quality, we’re talking about renowned artists such as Marc Chagall, Fernando Botero and Frank Gehry—in fact, the Presidential Suite even has a bright and splashy Sam Francis painting hanging in its bathroom. The St. Regis Singapore has a superb location in the heart of Singapore, with rooms overlooking Singapore’s Botanical Gardens, and premium shops just steps away. Luxury travel advisors take note: If you’re requesting rooms with poolside views, rooms on the lower floors are best. The opposite is true for rooms facing the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Tang Lin Road side—the hotel has 20 floors, so the best views are achieved the higher you go. Also of note, the higher the floor, the larger the room. Because of the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living rooms, all 37 suites provide semi-panoramic views of the city skyline and green surroundings. What really impressed us were the Executive Deluxe Rooms, which are essentially the standard rooms at the hotel. As mentioned earlier, Zen-like minimalism is thrown out the window, replaced by color-filled décor. Jim Thompson silks and marble bathrooms finish off these breathtaking accommodations. The hotel’s Six Specialty Suites book quickly; these include the Presidential Suite, Astoria Suite, King Cole Suite, Manhattan Suite, Knickerbocker Suite and Metropolitan Suite. The Presidential, Astoria and King Cole Suites—all on the top floor—are the three largest specialty suites in the house, and therefore serve as good picks for families. All rooms can be booked over the GDS, except for the Presidential Suite. If your clients don’t need the top pick at the property, the Astoria Suite—the second largest suite—can still earn them bragging rights with friends. Decorated predominately in shades of green and gold, this corner suite has a spacious living room, dining table for six and balcony overlooking the lush green of the Embassy District and Botanic Gardens.
