Premier Spas & Romance - Winter/Spring 2008 - (Page 8) FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR A Perfect Sense of Place L’Albergo della Regina Isabella, Lacco Ameno, Island of Ischia, Italy I’ve done some pretty extensive traveling in the past couple of years, and most of my journeys have taken me to fabulous hotels and resorts with some equally incredible spas. One of my favorite things about visiting spas all over the world is that, often, treatments and services employ ingredients—even techniques—that are unique to that particular destination, giving a true sense of place while you’re getting pampered. The island of Ischia, off of Italy’s Amalfi Coast, for example, is known for its thermal springs and mud, both of which are extremely high in natural mineral content and are believed to possess healing qualities. So, during my stay at L’Albergo della Regina Isabella (page 28), I headed to the spa for a thermal mud treatment and watched with eyes wide open as my no-nonsense attendant pulled a hulking lever on the wall, which released a steaming spout of the piping-hot mud straight out of the ground.
