Premier Hotels & Resorts - Winter/Spring 2009 - (Page 47) Header Athens Athens, the capital of Greece, is known the world over for its ancient extraordinary history, dating back to the time of Socrates and Pluto. Today, Athens is a must visit for history’s devotees looking for a glimpse of the past. Vestiges of antiquity such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Olympian are the tip of any sightseeing tour. But Athens isn’t a city stuck in the past. It is cosmopolitan, with a host of dining, shopping and lodging offerings. In fact, much of the city was built up in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games, from the infrastructure to social services. Most notable among the city’s projects Zakynthos was the Unification of Archaeological Sites, which connects the city’s classical-era ruins and monuments to each other through a network of attractive streets. Of course, what visit to Athens would be complete without eating the local fare, from fresh seafood to souvlaki, readily available throughout the city.
