Travel Agent - January 7, 2008 - (Page 55) THE BAHAMAS NEVER SEEMS TO REST. Already touted as a destination with a tight grip on the family market, The Bahamas used 2007 to further cement that reputation. Major upgrades to The Atlantis, the mega resort on Paradise Island, which included the March opening of the 600-suite The Cove Atlantis, serves as evidence of that trend. Meanwhile, the destination continued to roll out luxury developments and pump out announcements for future products. The bottom line? The Bahamas became an easier sell in 2007 and more openings should make it even more attractive in 2008. New $85 Million Development Opens The new $85 million Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club—a mix of real estate units and an upscale resort and yacht club with one of the largest deep-water marinas in the Out Islands of The Bahamas—opened in December with the debut of Powell Pointe Resort at Cape Eleuthera. Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club is better suited for your upscale clientele, specifically families with a lot of money. Set on a private 4,500-acre peninsula on Eleuthera Island, it features two-bedroom townhouse resort accommodations lining the marina and beachfront lots starting at $600,000 for real estate. Powell Pointe Resort at Cape Eleuthera is now open for resort guests while the rest of the development, which is still years away from completion, is available for real estate inquiries. Also open is the marina; a dive, snorkel and excursion center; a business kiosk with Internet service; several restaurants; and various other amenities. Powell Pointe Resort at Cape Eleuthera is the portion of the project you should care the most about. This hotel component includes 19 luxury, two-bedroom, fully complete, fully furnished Mariner Oceanview townhouses accommodating up to six people. Travel Agent has learned that an expansion of Powell Pointe Resort at Cape Eleuthera is expected to take place over the course of the development’s continued construction. Resort rooms are commissionable at 10 percent for travel agents providing an IATA number and booking the regular rate as posted on the web site, www.capeeleuthera.com. Agents should call Stephen Kappeler, general manager of Cape Eleuthera at 242-422-9977 or the sales office at 888-270-9642. The Cape Eleuthera Yacht Club offers the longest mega-yacht dock on Eleuthera at more than 450 feet and features a wide channel to ensure a gin-clear marina basin and protection against surges. The marina also accommodates vessels larger than 200 feet with depths up to 35 feet and currently holds 55 slips with a potential capacity of up to 200 people. Fishing, diving, kayaking and snorkeling are among the many activities of a Cape Eleuthera guest. Everything from dolphin, tuna, sailfish, wahoo and marlin can be found off the coast of south Eleuthera. Guests can also set off by boat or kayak to explore the Schooner Cays, four small islands. While on land, guests and homeowners enjoy the freedom to explore the many trails and hidden coves of Cape Eleuthera by golf cart, bicycle or on foot. Hiking trails, fitness trails and water sport rentals are all available for guest use as well. Located less than 220 miles off the east coast of Florida, the Cape Eleuthera resort and real estate project is being developed by the DeVos family, who formerly owned Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands.
