Travel Agent - January 19, 2009 - (Page 8) NEWS New Villas from CuisinArt Resort & Spa EARLIER THIS MONTH, CuisinArt Resort & Spa (www.cuisinartresort.com) in Anguilla announced the reopening of its Venus Spa & Fitness Center after a $10 million expansion that tripled the size of the pre-existing facility to 27,000 square feet. However, Travel Agent recently met up with David Lyon, the resort’s director of sales and marketing and got the inside scoop on plans to build six new standalone digs that they’re calling “Villas at CuisinArt Resort and Spa.” These will be the first-ever villas at the 96-room-and-suite resort. “These won’t be private residences,” Lyon tells us. “They’ll be part of the resort’s inventory.” The Details: The first three villas will come online in February; they’ll be three-bedroom beachfront accommodations with a private pool and terrace. The master bedroom will have sea views. EXCLUSIVE CTO Offices: Open or Closed? MILD CONTROVERSY SURROUNDED THE CARIBBEAN TOURISM ORGANIZATION (CTO) at year-end as several agents lashed out about an infrastructure makeover they claimed would eliminate more than 18 CTO chapters. Arthur Mehmel of TourScan Caribbean Vacations, a Caribbean-specialized travel agent since 1987 and recently treasurer of the Connecticut chapter of the CTO, sent an e-mail to Travel Agent and other media outlets, accusing Fernando Abreu, the deputy marketing director of CTO USA, of “threatening the chapters that if we do not send our entire treasuries to his office, he will pursue legal action against us.” However, the CTO issued a statement claiming the opposite. The CTO states that it is, in fact, looking to add more chapters. “It is the CTO’s desire to help chapters grow and provide the tools necessary to meet the overall objectives and strategies of the organization,” according to the CTO. “By creating a more centralized accounting system, as well as the other educational and organizational enhancements, it is also our desire to serve agents in markets where a CTO chapter may not exist and eventually see new chapters formed.” — JP Family Inspired The second set of villas will be available in late spring. These will be three five-bedroom, two-story units with garden views that can also be booked as two-bedrooms or three-bedrooms. Nice Touch: You’ll be able to see the ocean from the second floor. What inspired the resort to create the Villas at CuisinArt Resort and Spa? “We do a fair amount of multigenerational and family reunion travel,” explains Lyon. “We have only one three-bedroom unit and there was a demand for [more] three-bedrooms.” The beachfront villas have 3,500 square feet of interior space and 4,000 square feet of private outdoor space; the five-bedroom villas have 15,000 square feet of interior space and 18,000 square feet of outdoor space. Depending on the season, rates range from a low of $1,225 for a two-bedroom villa to a high of $8,300 for a five-bedroom. —MR The pool at CuisinArt Resort & Spa Another Reason to Visit Cuba WHETHER OR NOT TRAVEL FROM THE U.S. TO CUBA IS IMPENDING OR STILL YEARS AWAY (see the story on page 30), the destination’s mystique seems to still be growing for U.S. travelers. According to a Reuters report earlier this month, Cuba made the first of thousands of digitized documents, photographs and books that belonged to writer Ernest Hemingway available to scholars after the items “languished for decades in the basement of his home outside of Havana.” Viewing Locations So far, according to the report, about half of the 2,000 documents have been preserved and digitized; scholars who make a formal application to see them can view them at Finca Vigia in San Francisco de Paula, where Hemingway Ernest Hemingway is said to have written some of his greatest works. If you can’t get to Cuba, take note: Later this month, the documents will also be available at the Hemingway collection in the John F Kennedy Presidential . Library in Boston, according to the report. — JP 8 | TravelAgent January 19, 2009 http://www.cuisinartresort.com
