Travel Agent - February 2, 2009 - (Page 20) DESTINATIONS TAIL ME TOURS DEBUTS ON THE BIG ISLAND GREG NOTTINGHAM, A RESIDENT OF HAWAII’S BIG ISLAND, has created a new concept in privately escorted sightseeing tours that he calls Tail Me Tours (www.tailmetours.com). The client drives his or her own vehicle and follows, or “tails,” the Tail Me Tour driver. The client and driver are kept in constant radio communication through the use of a highpowered, two-way hands-free radio clipped to the visor of the rental car, with a second radio clipped to the visor of the lead Tail Me Tour driver. The client receives a full audio experience and guidance from the tour driver without that driver being present in the customer’s car. A flat rate of $300 per vehicle per six- to eight-hour day applies regardless of the number of passengers in the client’s vehicle. The drivers can also arrange to meet clients at the airport. Nottingham has already received interest from honeymooners who prefer a degree of privacy, and mothers traveling with infants who find the idea attractive because they won’t have to worry about lugging their child’s seat into a different vehicle. This is a fledgling company and the hiring of drivers is presently going full force, so it’s advisable to book as far in advance as possible. Tail Me Tours pays commissions to travel agents. For bookings and other questions, travel agents can reach out to Nottingham at 808-333-4016, gregnottingham@ tailmetours.com. MAUI’S HAWAIIAN HOTEL, HAWAI‘I’S BEST V ALUE! A formal grand opening of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will be celebrated in March 2009. The 243-room Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu (www.fourseasons. com/hualalai) has reached the halfway point in its multimillion-dollar property enhancement. Some of the guest rooms are being redesigned to create 20 new suites by adding parlors/ living rooms (at a cost of about $1.1 million each) between select buildings that bridge two bungalows together. When completed, this will increase the total number of suites to 51. The demand for suites comes from customers who are traveling with their families. Ten of these new suites were completed last December. These accommodations are being rolled out as they are completed, and management expects the rest of the suites to be done this spring. The expansion of the Hualalai Spa from 13,000 to 28,000 square feet includes a couples hall with a plunge pool and soaking tub and two new indoor treatment rooms (now totaling eight). Many of the treatments utilize natural, local Hawaii ingredients. Agents can book spa treatments for their guests up to two months in advance by contacting the resort’s spa director, Karen Cosgrove (karencosgrove@hualalairesort. com, 808-325-8400). The Beach Tree Bar & Grill will see an expansion of its terrace and a redesign of the restaurant interior. The restaurant reopens in May/June with a new California/Italian-influenced menu created by Executive Chef James Babian. The property’s travel agent liaisons are Leighton Kitagawa, sales manager (leighton.kitagawa @fourseasons.com, 310-286-7545), and Eric Kwan, director of travel industry sales (eric. kwan@fourseasons.com, 808-325-8007).
