NEWS IMPACT To Three Who Set an Example UNIGLOBE TRAVEL’S U. Gary Charlwood, Tauck World Discovery’s Arthur C. Tauck, Jr. and Holland America Line’s Kirk Lanterman rank among the pioneers who have made major contributions to the travel industry. All three have built companies that are not only successful but also strong brands with international reputations for integrity, quality and service delivery. All three also have reputations as outstanding managers. They are each reaping the recognition that comes from success. Charlwood recently became the first Canadian and non-U.S. citizen to be named to the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) Hall of Fame. Lanterman and Tauck are being honored with the NTA’s 2008 Pioneer Award for significant changes in the travel industry from which NTA and its members have benefited. Over the past three decades, Charlwood has guided the growth of two of the world’s leading franchise businesses: Uniglobe Travel International and Century 21 Canada Real Estate. Since 1980 Charlwood has nurtured Uniglobe to be the world’s largest single-brand travel franchise company with more than 700 locations in 33 countries. He chairs the Charlwood Pacific Group and served on ASTA’s Corporate Affairs Council. Lanterman has led Holland America Line to become one of the world’s leading cruise lines. He oversaw the growth of the company from a three-ship operation to one of the most successful and innovative cruise companies in the world with bookings of more than $1 billion annually. For more than 50 years, Arthur Tauck, Jr. has been a true visionary for the travel business. He grew his father’s small tour business from an agency offering six itineraries on the East Coast to Tauck World Discovery, which moves tens-of-thousands of travelers to more than 60 countries worldwide every year. NTA Chairman and CEO Bob Hoelscher said of Tauck and Lanterman: “They are progressive, George Dooley creative and dynamic individuals who have kept their fingers on the pulse of this changing industry, and that has made them into the visionaries they are.
