In the South Paciﬁc, privacy might mean a picnic on a private islet accessible only by boat, a helicopter trip into untrammeled wilderness for heli-skiing, or a night in a luxury tree house villa, deep in a rainforest. IDYLLIC ISLANDS Fiji, to honeymooners, usually means an all-inclusive private island resort, shared by eight to twenty other couples. In this archipelago of more than 300 islands, only a third of which are inhabited, the sense of being removed from the world is real; many resorts can only be reached by seaplane or boat and may be miles from the next nearest land mass. Spectacular reefs make for thrilling snorkeling and scuba diving throughout most of the Fijian islands. Sea kayaking, deep sea ﬁshing and sailing are available at most resorts; some also offer golf and horseback riding. Accommodations are usually traditional thatch-roof bures (cottages). Inside, most have ceiling fans, electric lights, CD players and air conditioning; few have phones, TV or internet service. And Fiji is still a place where most visitors will be invited to attend a traditional lovo (feast) with a meke (celebration) of song and dance, followed by a yagona or kava ceremony. There are dozens of private island resorts; each has its own personality. The small number of guests generally makes these hideaways quite social and friendly. At Vatulele Island Resort, where bures are interspersed with jungle along the beach to ensure privacy, nature rules; telephones and TVs are taboo (mobile phones work, but are banned in public areas). The Wakaya Club & Spa, a 2,200 acre private island provides high speed internet—but no TV—in the bures. At Turtle Island, interested guests are serenaded at a school built by resort owner Richard Evanson, while the Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort has a resident marine biologist.
