Travel Agent- March 30, 2009 - (Page 6) FROM THE EDITOR TravelAgent VICE PRESIDENT—CONTENT/ EDITORIAL DIRECTOR RUTHANNE TERRERO, CTC 212-895-8423, rterrero@questex.com What I Learned From Being Home THERE ARE SIGNS THAT INDICATE YOU’VE BEEN TRAVELING TOO MUCH. One is when instead of showing your monthly train pass to the conductor on the Long Island Railroad you hand him your driver’s license, as if you’re checking in for a flight. I do that every few months and they still don’t find that amusing, even after all these years. When I got on the downtown subway last night, I knew I’d been traveling too much. I saw a tall woman with red hair getting off the train. I knew I knew her. I thought perhaps I’d met her at a travel industry function, but then I noticed she was wearing a pin with an eagle on it and she was pulling a rollerboard suitcase. She was a flight attendant on American Airlines. I’m sure our paths had crossed a few times on the many flights I’d taken over the past few months. When I am in the office for a few days on end, I’m always thrilled to be able to meet with travel industry leaders who visit our Manhattan headquarters. This week, executives from Collette Vacations came by: President & CEO Dan Sullivan; Nicole Sullivan, Collette’s branding supervisor; and Frank Marini, vice president of sales. Collette is about to announce some big news that they’d rather I didn’t tell you just yet, but you can read about it on TravelAgentCentral.com on April 1. What I can tell you is that I learned more about the Collette Foundation, which was created to help children around the world. Last year it funded projects in Mexico, Peru, South Africa, China and Ireland, to name but a few. What’s neat is that Collette clients can visit with the children in the program during their trips. That’s a fantastic opportunity at a time when travelers are interested in “giving back.” Steve Born, vice president of marketing for the Globus family of brands, also paid us a visit with his colleague, Patrick Clark, managing director of Avalon Waterways (that’s Steve, me and Patrick, left to right, above). Avalon is adding two new ships in 2010; that’s on top of the two new ships it will debut in 2009. Next year’s new vessels will be based in France, a country that Avalon, and Globus in general, is quite bullish on these days. Clark says the country took a three-year dip in popularity after 9/11 but that pent-up demand for all things French is spurring new business. Born says that overall, the company is seeing a demand for “vacations with a purpose,” religious vacations and family travel all good niches for you to consider exploring during these challenging times.
