NEWS IMPACT News from the Islands Legendary Paradise Island Developer Dies Huntington Hartford may have died at the age of 97 on May 19, but his spirit will live on at one of the Caribbean' s most famous islands. According to Paul O' Neil, CEO of Kerzner International, Hartford bought the majority of what was then known as Hog Island in 1959, and renamed his new property Paradise Island. He then assisted in the development of arguably the destination' s most prominent resort, the One&Only Ocean Club (www.oneandon lyresorts.com). Hartford was also responsible for importing The Cloisters from France, an open-air colonnade overlooking the Harbor on one side and the Versailles Gardens on the other. Hartford, who died at his home in Lyford Cay, Bahamas, was credited with developing the Versailles Gardens at the One&Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas. The gardens have remained the resort' s most popular attraction since Hartford designed them in 1959. The Cloisters and the Gardens still remain in top condition and serve as one of the Bahamas' best spots for weddings and special occasions. In fact, many celebrities, including Martha Stewart, as well as prominent business leaders throughout the world, have occupied the area. ª All of us at Kerzner International and the One&Only Ocean Club are very saddened by the passing of Huntington Hartford,º O' Neil told Travel Agent. ª Without his early vision, the Ocean Club certainly would not be what it is today.
