Travel Agent - July 21, 2008 - (Page 8) Agent CONTRIBUTORS Insider What is your favorite European destination? KIRK CASSELS, associate web managing editor for TravelAgentCentral.com, has played a significant role in the launch of the site. Before joining, he was the online editor for Plum TV’s Hamptons website and the manager of the company’s network-wide television ticker. While receiving his master’s degree in journalism at Temple University, he assisted in the creation of the school’s Multi-media Urban Reporting Lab– guiding undergraduates in fusing print, broadcast and online journalism. Cassels has more than 10 years experience in print media, writing and editing for seven different publications. THE MEDITERRANEAN “I like the Mediterranean and feel more at home there,” says Joan Menken of Cruise Market Inc. in New York City. “I love Italy—north, south all of it. I just wish they had riverboat sailing in Italy. They just don’t think the depths of their rivers are dependable enough due to the weather.” NICK GOSLING is a contributor to Travel Agent magazine. Before beginning his career as a travel writer, Gosling worked as a reporter for newspapers in Maine and New Hampshire. He recently visited Tanzania for Travel Agent, where he attended the Africa Travel Association’s 33rd Annual Congress in Arusha (page 24) and went on safaris to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Arusha National Park. During a recent assignment, he took a cross-country road trip, stopping along the way at the Grand Canyon (left), Moab National Park and Glenwood Springs, CO. ENGLAND “My favorite destination is Cornwall, England,” says Jean Simpson Mallory of White Travel in West Hartford, CT. “My family is from there and it has the greatest memories. It has some of the quaintest places. You can also walk through pastures and no one cares, there are no large ‘Trespassing’ signs. You can just enjoy.” SUSAN J. YOUNG, contributing editor, is a 20-year travel industry veteran. Young advises friends and fellow travelers on structured tours or cruise day trips to forego the half hour free time for gift shop browsing at any destination. Instead, she likes to just head around the corner, perhaps down a side street or into an adjacent courtyard to observe how people live. As Travel Agent’s former cruise editor, Young is a veteran of more than 60 cruises. A member of the Society of American Travel Writer’s Editors’ Council, Young (shown here at Segesta in Sicily) has journeyed from East Africa to Southeast Asia. Her travel passion is perusing Roman ruins anywhere in the world. In this issue she writes about combining the fun of cruising with extreme cultural shore trips (page 58). AMSTERDAM “Amsterdam is a very versatile city,” says Annette Blancaneaux of Worldwide Vacation & Travel in Miami. “What JOE PIKE, associate editor for Travel Agent magazine, covers the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Mexico and Central and South America. In this issue’s cover story, Pike reports on the recent Annual Caribbean Tourism Summit (ACTS) in Washington, D.C. (see page 46), where he sat down with some of the Caribbean’s most notable tourism officials. Pike also recently returned from a two-day stay in Atlantic City, where he covered the grand opening of the new The Water Club, A Signature Hotel By Borgata. I liked was the people. When we went, we had a Eurorail pass. We met a woman at the train station who was renting out rooms in her home. We got to see the city from a local’s perspective. Amsterdam is my favorite destination in Northern Europe—Athens is a different story!” 8 | TravelAgent July 21, 2008 MARK ROGERS, senior editor, covers two destinations in this issue, Australia’s Hamilton Island (page 28) and Taiwan’s capital city of Taipei (page 20). He also interviews Paul Kerr, CEO of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, about the company’s Asia Pacific expansion. He recently returned from Malaysia (he is pictured in Putrajaya, Malaysia), where he visited Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Sarawak. You can read his blog reports from the trip on www.travelagentcentral.com. Rogers covers Hawaii, the South Pacific and Asia, as well as California, where he is based. http://www.travelagentcentral.com
