Carnival’s New Water Features The Week in Cruising The buzz last week in the cruise world was centered on a downturn in cruise passengers to the Cayman Islands and Carnival’s new water features for its Fantasy-class ships. Cayman Islands Chatter June sailings to the Cayman Islands were down, but air arrivals were up, according to the latest word from the Cayman Islands Ministry of Tourism. A total of 95,955 cruise ship passengers touched down in Grand Cayman, which is 34,589 fewer than in May (a 26.4 percent decrease). Conversely, air arrival figures grew by 2,410. So, what gives? Tourism Minister Charles Clifford notes that one of the reasons for the downturn could be that cruise lines tend to deploy some of their inventory to Alaska and Europe during the summer months. But a 26.4 percent drop is quite abrupt—any other reason for the slide? Ah, of course, and it’s one that’s been thrown around by travel agents and cruise lines alike over the course of this year. “In addition,” says Clifford, “there has been a general softening of the U.S. economy, which may have impacted the number of cruise travelers during the period.” Follow the money, eh?
