Here you’ll ﬁnd the states of Sabah and Sarawak, with the countries of Brunei to the north and Indonesia to the south. What really sets Eastern Malaysia apart is its multitude of ethnic communities. This is the land of the headhunter of yesteryear, of longhouses and authentic tribal customs. SABAH Visiting Sabah is a journey into diversity. Here you’ll ﬁnd 32 different ethnic communities speaking 80 dialects. Sabah lies to the north of Sarawak. Its major city is Kota Kinabalu, on the west coast. Many tourists use the city as a gateway to eco-tours and soft adventure such as whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, caving, diving and river cruising. The journey passes through the scenic Padas Gorge. Sabah contains Malaysia’s ﬁrst World Heritage Site, Kinabalu National Park. Hardy hikers will enjoy the two-day hike to the summit of Mount Kinabalu. Another option is to relax in the nearby Poring Hot Springs or traverse a canopy walkway through the treetops. Sabah also gives visitors a chance to closely observe orangutans. The Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre is in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, and was set up in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned baby orangutans. Feeding time at the centre is 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. by rangers.
