Caribbean Update Caribbean Tourism’s Arley Sobers Dies August 14 marked a sad day for Caribbean tourism as Arley Sobers, the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) interim secretary general and director of information management and research, died in his sleep, according to a CTO spokesperson. Sobers’ passing came when his career was just about to elevate to the next level, having recently replaced Vincent VanderpoolWallace in the prominent role of secretary general. “We in the CTO family have lost our heart and the Caribbean has lost a brilliant, passionate and compassionate friend in the passing of Arley Sobers,” Vanderpool-Wallace said. “He was my sounding board, my confidant, my advisor and my great friend during my years at CTO and long before. He helped to establish and solidify CTO’s global reputation as a source of information on the Caribbean. The 88-room, 20-suite property offers a 10 percent commission. All rooms are similar in design and amenities with size being the only major differentiating feature. Travel Agent learned that although the property is equipped for just about every client, agents are already planning on targeting younger, affluent travelers. Alan Paris, a four-year veteran of Tucker’s Point Club, will be the hotel manager of Tucker’s Point Hotel & Spa and vice president of Residence Club operations. As hotel manager, Paris will manage all internal operations of the property. As vice president of Residence Club operations, Paris will oversee day-to-day operations of the Residence Club Golf Villas, which opened in 2005. Prior to taking on the dual roles, Paris served as Tucker’s Point Club’s general manager and assistant to the COO for three years, where he was responsible for the final development and opening of the Residence Club at Tucker’s Point Club. New Flights Between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic JetBlue Airways (www.jetblue. com) announced in mid-August plans to launch its first intraCaribbean service with daily nonstop service between San Juan, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
