Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airlines operate several daily flights from Bangkok to Phuket, with a flight of about one hour. Phuket is 516 miles from Bangkok, a journey of about 12 hours by car. There is no direct rail link to Phuket; the nearest railway station is Phun Phin in Surat Thani, where travelers can catch a Phuket-bound bus (about a three-hour ride). KO SAMUI Ko Samui (or Koh Samui) is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, close to the mainland town of Surat Thani. Ko Samui is synonymous with good times and has an international reputation for knowing how to throw a party. Its sandy bays are lined with bungalows and resorts, plenty of restaurants, and hip nightlife venues. The island’s pulsing nights are paired with quiet days. Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai are considered to be Ko Samui’s most beautiful, most popular beaches. Ko Samui hotels include Bandara Resort and Spa and Le Meridian Ban Taling Ngam. Ko Samui’s neighbor islands are Ko PhaNgan famous for hosting the world’s biggest beach full moon party; and the island of Ko Tao, renowned for its excellent coral reefs. Visitors can fly to Surat Thani from Bangkok and then take a ferry to Ko Samui. Thai Airways International has two daily flights connecting Bangkok with Surat Thani. The flight time is approximately 70 minutes. The ferry for passengers and cars to Ko Samui has departures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., a trip that takes about 90 minutes. KRABI Many consider Krabi to be the most beautiful province along the Andaman Coast. Here you’ll find the twin Phi Phi isles, instantly familiar to those who saw the Leonardo DiCaprio movie “The Beach.” Attractions on Krabi include Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, a marine national park; and Mu Ko Lanta National Park, which encompasses several islands ringed by coral reefs. For a change of pace, travel inland and stop at the town of Mueang Krabi, for its riverside life, markets and local color. Places to stay include Andaman Holiday Resort, Andaman Sunset Resort, and Best Western Ao Nang Bay Resort and Spa. Getting there is easy: Thai Airways International operates daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi, an 80-minute flight. You can also fly from Phuket to Krabi on Phuket Air which offers a daily flight to and from Krabi. www.tourismthailand.org/la | 23 http://www.tourismthailand.org/la
