ENJOY THE FUN, SUN, SURF AND SERENITY OF Thailand’s Beaches SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELING Thailand’s coast and its islands provide plenty of prime dive sites. Scuba divers will find good water visibility, abundant marine y life and all the support they need, from transportation to accommodations. All reputable dive shops are affiliated with PADI or other P international dive bodies, and most hold courses in several languages. Diving is possible at all times of the year, although visibility changes according to the season. In the Andaman Sea, the best time is from October to April, A and in the Gulf of Thailand from May to September. Prime dive sites in the Andaman Sea are found off the coast of Phuket, including such spots as Shark Point, Red Rock, Ko Yao, Ko Yai, and the twin islands of Ko Racha, extending to K the Similan and Surin islands to the west, Krabi T and Trang to the east. In the Gulf of Thailand, the best sites are around Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Y T Tao, Ko Nang Yuan, Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine National Park, and Ko T Chang in Trat Province near the Cambodian border. Divers on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand can book dive trips from Pattaya out to Ko Larn, Ko Sak, Ko K K Krok, Ko Rin, Ko Pai and Ko Marn Vichai. Snorkelling trips are K available around Phuket, Ko Samui, Pattaya, and all other beach destinations in Thailand. Snorkelling excursions are usually combined with sea kayaking and picnics on isolated islands and marine national parks. Pattaya and Phuket are the main areas for sport fishing. Boats equipped with all the neces- Yachting and Sailing Adventures in Thailand Phuket is Thailand’s premier sailing destination. Phuket hosts annual racing events, such as the “King’s Cup Regatta” and the “Phuket Invitational Superyacht Rendez-vous.” Both events are held in December at the Amanpuri Resort. A variety of vessels are available for charter, from wooden schooners to fiberglass cruisers and state-ofthe-art powerboats, at Laem Phrao Yacht Marina, Phuket Boat Lagoon and Yacht Haven. Pattaya is also a prime destination for sailors. Most weeks, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club holds regattas for smaller beach launched sailboats. The Ocean Marina Yacht Club on Jomtien Beach, just south of Pattaya, has jetties, pontoon berths and onshore facilities. Ocean Marina also has three boats for private charter and ten Optimist-class boats for teaching beginners. Gulf Charters operates from Ocean Marina with a fleet of 19 sailing yachts for charter.
