Freshwater Rafting Skills Rafters will find the scenery breathtaking in Thailand, with rivers passing through spectacular tropical forests and steep canyons, with often a glimpse of waterfalls. The northern mountainous regions feature Thailand’s most thrilling white-water rapids from June to October, when the rivers swell with rain. Rafting is graded into five levels, all requiring leadership by experienced guides. Rafting trips can range from several hours to multi-day excursions combining camping. In the North, a favorite route is on the Pai River in Mae Hong Son. In Khao Yai National Park, the Kaeng Hin Peung rapids are Class 3-5, presenting a challenge for experienced rafters only. The Nayok River, north of Bangkok, offers Class 1-3 rapids. In Nan, rafting on the Nan River takes four or five hours and arrives at the village of Had Ban Rai. In Umphang, rafting from the beautiful Thi Lo Su Waterfall takes three or four hours. Kayaking trips from Phuket are usually comprised of small groups of two passenger kayaks accompanied by a support boat carrying food and equipment. Three-day excursions, complete with camping, explore eight islands.On Thailand’s southeastern seaboard near the Cambodian border, Ko Chang National Park in Trat Province has more than 50 islands waiting to be explored. Sea-canoe excursions operate all year round, although the rains from June to October can put a crimp in things.
