Hua Hin and Cha-am: Both destinations are an easy three-hour drive from Bangkok. Phuket: Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airlines operate several daily flights from Bangkok to Phuket, with a flight of about one hour. Phuket is 516 miles from Bangkok, a journey of about 12 hours by car. There is no direct rail link to Phuket; the nearest railway station is Phun Phin in Surat Thani, where travelers can catch a Phuket-bound bus (about a three-hour ride). Koh Samui: Visitors can fl y to Surat Thani from Bangkok and then take a ferry to Koh Samui. Thai Airways International has two daily flights connecting Bangkok with Surat Thani. The flight time is approximately 70 minutes. The ferry for passengers and cars to Koh Samui has departures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., a trip that takes about 90 minutes. Krabi: Getting there is easy: Thai Airways International operates daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi, an 80-minute flight. You can also fl y from Phuket to Krabi on Phuket Air which offers a daily flight to and from Krabi. Sportfishing Anglers can hook marlin, sailfish, and tuna, off the Andaman coast of Phuket and Krabi province. The twin islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi off Phuket offer fishing for sailfish, black marlin, wahoo and tuna. Conditions are great for both beginners and experienced anglers. Pattaya and Phuket are the main areas for sportfishing. Boats equipped with all the necessary tackle gear can easily be chartered. The rocks south of Pattaya are the habitat of several species native to the Gulf of Thailand, such as red snapper, yellow jack, bonito, black-tipped sharks, cobia and giant groupers. Deep-sea fishing contests are run according to the rules of the International Game Fishing Association which insists on catch and release for sharks, underweight fish and billfish. Southern Thailand extends along a narrow peninsula lying between the Andaman Sea on its west side and the South China Sea on the east. The east coast on the Gulf of Thailand presents calmer seas and a laid-back atmosphere, while the Andaman Sea coast Hua Hin and Cha-am Hua Hin is Thailand’s oldest beach resort, and has been a destination for royalty and members of high society since the early 1900s.
