Thailand Sales Planner - From Travel Agent September 15, 2008 - (Page 17) attention in recent years – it’s become a haven for trendsetters, and is often referred to as being Thailand’s version of the Hamptons. Cha-am, just 15 miles from Hua Hin, is another seaside resort town. Cha-am and Hua Hin both offer white sand, crystalclear water and a tranquil atmosphere. In addition to watersports, visitors can ride horses, play tennis, and tee off on a number of golf courses. Phuket Phuket’s clear blue waters, coconut groves and rubber plantations make it a unique beach resort area, earning it the nickname “Pearl of the South.” Phuket, Thailand’s largest and most visited island, is connected to the mainland via the Sarasin Bridge. Its many beaches range from gentle crescents to rocky headlands. Here’s a sampling: Phuket’s center of action is Hat Patong, the most developed beach on the island. Here you’ll find the largest selection of hotels and restaurants, and the most vibrant nightlife. Hotels in the region include familiar brands such as Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Le Meridian Phuket, and Mövenpick Spa & Resort Karon Beach Phuket. Phuket’s longest beach is Hat Mai Khao, while palm-fringed Hat Rawai is best known for its community of sea-gypsies – a formerly nomadic fishing minority believed to be of Melanesian descent. For great Thai seafood, make tracks for the beachfront location of Ao Chalong, where you’ll find a selection of excellent restaurants. Those in search of a primo place to catch a Phuket sunset should head out to Laem Promthep, the southernmost point of the island. Phuket For a change of pace from the beach, visit Phuket Fantasea, a theme park containing a festival village with entertainment, handicrafts, games and shops. The Thai Village offers cultural shows of Thai dancing, sword-fighting and boxing, while serving up southern Thai specialties for dinner. The Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World displays colorful butterflies and other fascinating insects in their natural surroundings. Krabi Krabi is often singled out as the most beautiful province along the Andaman Coast. Here you’ll find the twin Phi Phi isles, instantly familiar to those who saw the Leonardo DiCaprio movie “The Beach.” Attractions on Krabi include Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, a marine national park; and Mu Koh Lanta National Park, which encompasses several islands ringed by coral reefs. For a change of pace, travel inland and stop at the town of Mueang Krabi, for its riverside life, markets and local color. Places to stay include Andaman Holiday Resort, Andaman Sunset Resort, and Best Western Ao Nang Bay Resort and Spa. Koh Samui The island of Koh Samui has an international reputation for welcoming trendsetting party people from around the world. Its sandy bays are lined with bungalows and resorts, plenty of restaurants, and hip nightlife venues. Koh Samui lies off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, close to the mainland town of Surat Thani. The island’s pulsing nights are paired with quiet days. Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai are considered to be Koh Samui’s most beautiful, most popular beaches. Koh Samui hotels include Bandara Resort and Spa and Le Meridian Ban Taling Ngam. Koh Samui’s neighbor islands are Koh Pha-Ngan, famous for hosting the world’s biggest beach full moon party, and the island of Koh Tao, renowned for its excellent coral reefs.
