Thailand Sales Planner - From Travel Agent September 15, 2008 - (Page 25) a range of rooms From ultra hip to ultra luxe to ultra budget, Thailand has accommodations for every desire and taste For decades upon decades, Thailand’s hotels have attracted accolades as being some of the best hotels in the world. In a survey earlier this year, Small Luxury Hotels of the World Club members were asked to choose their top five favorite city-center hotels and top resorts. Thailand made a knockout showing with lebua at State Tower, Bangkok coming in fourth on the city-center list, while Twinpalms, Phuket, Thailand, came in second; and The Racha, Muang, Thailand scored the number five spot in the resort category. Sophistication Reigns A recently opened property will give you an idea of the sophistication that is quickly becoming the norm among Thailand resorts. Design Hotels’s new Alila Cha-Am in the Gulf of Thailand is a contemporary beachside resort two hours south of Bangkok, with 79 rooms and villas, including pool villas with private garden, pool and terrace. The resort has a spa, poolside dining, and chill-out socializing at The Chill Pool and Red Bar. Both the spa and restaurants feature ingredients from the resort’s own organic garden. This is the kind of cutting-edge accommodations you can expect from hip and happening Thailand. Some of the finest business and luxury hotels are found in Thailand, with the greatest majority of these in Bangkok. Some of Bangkok’s properties have achieved icon status, such as The Oriental, while others offer a cool, green oasis in the midst of the city, such as the 11-acre Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa. You’ll also find world-class hotels throughout the country, especially in resort areas such as Phuket, Pattaya, and Ko Samui, and in Thailand’s second biggest city, Chiang Mai. The beach resort of Hua Hin is an especially up-andcoming area, with sophisticated hotels coming on market – many people liken Hua Hin to New York’s Hamptons. Five-star hotels and resorts go the extra mile for the business or leisure traveler, providing designer toiletries, plush robes, in-room stereo systems, inhouse DVDs, and WiFi. Some of the best restaurants are operated by hotels, and many of the finer properties host a whole range of dining choices. Those traveling outside major tourist resort areas will find a smaller selection of hotels. Many of these properties cater to Thais, and offer great value. The upper end of this range will be air-conditioned; while at the lower range guests have to make-do with an overhead ceiling fan. Many of these moderate-priced properties have swimming pools, restaurants, satellite TV, in-room safes, and in-room international direct dialing. Both expensive and moderately priced hotels add a 10 percent service charge plus seven percent government tax, also called a value-added tax (VAT). Visitors don’t have to break the bank to vacation in the Land of Smiles. A little research may help you find a real bargain that also provides quaint accommodations and personalized service. The country’s budget hotels, guest houses and hostels are great options for those willing to choose price over comfort. Rest Easy with Name Hotels Those who find comfort in the known quantity of familiar brand-name hotels and resorts will find such accommodations throughout the country, and especially in Bangkok. These include Banyan Tree, Four Seasons, Hilton, Hyatt, Le Meridien, Marriott, Peninsula, Ramada, Shangri-La, Sheraton, Sofitel, Novotel, Holiday Inn and Westin. The Ritz-Carlton Bangkok Hotel is on track to open at the end of this year. Perhaps less familiar to tourists, but equally high-end, are the Thai-ownedand operated Amari, Centara, and Dusit hotel chains. 25 AMAZING T HAIL AND T RAVEL PL ANN ER
