Thai Traditional Events Festivals are a great opportunity to see Thainess in action. Likae folk performances of traditional music and dance are often staged at temple fairs and community gatherings and create a festive atmosphere in a local district. Some events are unique and held in a particular place such as the water procession to the holy spirit shrine in Sukhothai. Others are popular and long observed so that they become regional events, such as Poi Luang in the North, Hit Sip Song in the Northeast, and Chak Phra in the South. Thai Boxing Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, combines a no-holds barred contest with a music-filled evening. There are Muay Thai stadiums across the country, but those in the know recommend catching a match in Bangkok for ultimate spectacle and authenticity. Bangkok stadiums include Lumphini, Ratchadamnoen, Channel 7 and Omnoi. Those who want to learn the sport themselves can contact the Muay Thai Institute at muaythai-institute.net/. Muay Thai contestants tape their bare feet and wear international-style gloves and trunks. They mix it up for five rounds to the accompaniment of a threepiece orchestra as the audience makes their bets.
