Women boxers are entering the game, adding a whole new perspective to Muay Thai. Thailand Etiquette When sitting across from someone make a point of not crossing your legs with your foot pointed toward that person. According to ancient Hindu beliefs, the foot is considered the most unclean part of the body, so even though it’s totally innocent on your part, a Thai will be deeply insulted by the gesture. Conversely, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body, so it’s bad form to touch a Thai person on the head. Thais don’t normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called wai. It is perfectly polite to wai back with your palms pressed together near your chest. Buddhist temples have an etiquette all their own. When visiting a Buddhist temple, show respect by not wearing short shorts or revealing clothing, and remove your shoes before entering the temple. It’s a good chance you’ll encounter Buddhist monks throughout your travels in Thailand. It is forbidden for Bud- dhist monks to be touched by women. If a woman wants to make an offering to a monk, she must first give it to a man, who will then hand it to the monk. In the U.S. we have a tradition of mocking our leaders – a listen to a Jay Leno or David Letterman monologue will point that out. Not so in Thailand. The people of Thailand revere the Royal Family, and a visitor should be careful to show respect when speaking about the King, the Queen and all members of the Royal Family. Thai Culinary Arts Thai cuisine has caught on across the world and is especially popular in the U.S. where diners are probably familiar with some of the mainstream dishes, like pad Thai and lemongrass soup. On arrival in Thailand you’ll find a rich assortment of dishes that go far beyond the run-ofthe-mill American offerings. The main ingredients used to spice up Thai cooking are lemongrass, basil, coriander, chilies, garlic and coconut milk. Restaurants are always willing to tone down the spicy hotness if you ask. Be sure to try Mieng Kam. Imagine a plate containing a small bowl of Thai vine leaves surrounded by tiny dishes of dried coconut, ginger, dried shrimp, hot peppers, red onion, peanuts, diced limes with the peel still on and a small dish containing a pungent sauce. You fold the leaf into a kind of origami bowl and then fill it with whatever combina- the thai way of living There are several ways for visitors to experience the Thai way of life. They can visit villages in rural areas to catch a glimpse of daily life and time-honored traditions. Such visits can be made in the form of a one-day tour or an overnight stay. Activities vary from village to village and might include a boat ride, elephant ride, cycling, art and cultural shows, homestay, a village visit, local dining, a local lifestyle museum visit, paying homage to revered Buddhist monks, worshipping religious monuments and sacred objects. A Thai Homestay allows visitors to stay at the house of a local host. Both the visitor and the host have a common objective to exchange knowledge and learn about culture and lifestyles voluntarily. For a fee the host provides food, accommodations and tours to nearby attractions. A Village Visit brings visitors to a community or village, with an option to stay overnight in the community. Agricultural Tourism gives tourists a chance to observe and experience life in an agricultural community or to visit government agencies and educational institutions conducting research and developing agricultural technology.
