Here’s a list of the kinds of sights you’ll be able to include in your Thai vacation: historical parks, archaeological sites, royal palaces and residences, throne halls, stone sanctuaries, monuments, heroic shrines, cemeteries, forts, city walls and gates, and city moats. When visitors take the time to seek out such sights, they’ll collect a set of experiences that deepen their knowledge and understanding of the history and archaeology of Thailand. Following is an overview of Thailand’s historical treasures in the country’s Central, North and Northeastern regions, along with information on traveling to and from the various regions, plus hints on where to stay, shop and dine – all of the insider tips you’ll need for a well-rounded Thai adventure. Phra Kaeo temple (wat means “temple” in Thai), a treasure trove of Thai arts where the Emerald Buddha, the national Buddha image, is enshrined. The Grand Palace is surrounded by other places and temples, including Wat Arun, (Temple of Dawn), with its 269foot-high pagoda; and Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha). Museums in the Rattanakosin area include the Royal Elephant National Museum, the National Gallery and the Queen Sirkit Arts Exhibition Center. The Royal Barge Museum exhibits barges that were once vessels of war and are now used for ceremonial purposes. These awe-inspiring craft are each carved from a single piece of teak. For a change of pace, visit Jim Thompson’s Thai House, a prime example of traditional Thai domestic architecture. The house is now a museum displaying Thompson’s collection of Thai and Asian antiques. Jim Thompson is something of a legend. He came to CENTRAL THAILAND & BANGKOK Bangkok was founded in 1782 by the first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty. Visitors to Bangkok would be remiss if they didn’t make an excursion to Bangkok’s Rattanakosin area (also called Rattanakosin Island, although it’s been incorporated into the city) on the western side of the city.
