Sky Train in Bangkok Outside Bangkok The Central Plain is rich in both historical sites and leisure destinations. Popular sights outside Bangkok include Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand and now home to the Ayutthaya Historical Park, one of the most popular of the world’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Kanchanaburi, where visitors can see the storied Bridge on the River Kwai; and Nakhon Pathom, with its remarkable floating markets. Enjoying Bangkok There’s nothing quite like Bangkok – it’s an urban capital that pulses with excitement, making a sensual impression at every turn. Bangkok consistently rates high on any list of Asia’s most popular cities. Bangkok is split by the Chao Phraya River; the east side of the city is the busiest and of most interest to tourists. The visitor to Bangkok will find numerous modes of transportation, including buses, taxis, tuk tuks, motorcycle taxis, river taxis and a sophisticated Skytrain and Metro system. Accommodations: To minimize travel time in the city, it’s a good idea to choose a hotel in the neighborhood of greatest interest to you. There are plenty of hotels to choose from, including some of the most celebrated in the world. Many of these are located along the Chao Phraya River. Bangkok’s famous riverside hotels on the east side include The Oriental Bangkok, Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ramada Plaza Menam Riverside, Marriott Resort & Spa, and Shangri-La. Top hotels on the opposite bank include the Peninsula and the Millennium Hilton. A highlight of choosing one of these properties is the dining and nightlife venues offering glittering views of the river, a magical and romantic experience. Many hotels also offer evening river cruises on well-appointed boats. Visitors will find more great hotels throughout the city, including those geared toward the business traveler. travelling to thailand’s treasures Sukhothai: Bangkok Airways flies from Bangkok to Sukhothai daily, a 60-minute flight Chiang Mai: There are several flights daily between Bangkok and Chiang Mai via domestic airlines, including Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia, Nok Air, Orient Thai Airlines and Phuket Air. Express and rapid trains leave six times a day for Chiang Mai from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station; on express trains it’s a 12-hour journey to Chiang Mai. Lampang: Lampang doesn’t have its own airport; regular trains depart daily from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Railway Station to Lampang. Chiang Rai: Daily flights to Chiang Rai are available from Bangkok. Udon Thani: Thai Airways flies daily between Bangkok and Udon Thani; and several trains leave daily from Bangkok’s Hua Lampong Railway station. Those on a budget will be pleased to see the range of moderately priced hotels and guest houses. One of the beauties of Bangkok is the way it spreads its arms wide to welcome all travelers. Dining out: Although there are great stand-alone restaurants in Bangkok, some of the most celebrated dining experiences are located in hotels. These include The Dome complex and Breeze Asian seafood restaurant at lebua at State Tower, the luxury boutique hotel on Silom Road; China House at The Oriental Bangkok Hotel with its dramatic new decor; the newly-designed rooftop Rib Room & Bar at the Landmark Bangkok; the splendid Prime steakhouse at the Millennium Hilton; D’Sens French restaurant at the Dusit Thani; Pier 59 seafood restaurant at Banyan Tree; and Madison at the Four Seasons.
