Travel Agent - September 24, 2007 - (Page 24) Destinations Family-owned resort aims to diversify its offerings as island profile shifts BY LAURA WATILO BLAKE Central & South America Anthony’s Key Resort, Roatan, Honduras T hankfully, while Hurricane Felix did bring thunder and lightning, strong winds and torrential rain to Roatan, the island was spared any serious damage, and tourism was not interrupted. Roatan is the largest—and most frequented—of the three islands and more than 60 islets and keys that make up the Bay Islands, 30 miles off the coast of Honduras. “The Bay Islands have always marketed themselves as the Bay Islands because the name ‘Honduras’ has always been clouded in relation to Central America and its political problems,” says Samir Galindo, who manages the family-owned Anthony’s Key Resort, known as AKR (www.anthonyskey.com), with his siblings. “But things have changed so much in the last 20 years in terms of the stability of the government—it’s democratic and getting stronger.” Even so, Roatan has remained relatively mysterious, except to scuba divers, who come for the healthy and diverse reef system, and sailing enthusiasts, who have used Roatan as a stopover since the late 1960s.
