Travel Agent - September 24, 2007 - (Page 27) A guest room Photo by Shawn Jackson year, has also tried to standardize its 56 wooden cabanas on the property, 46 of which dot the perimeter of the private 10acre island, Anthony’s Key. Ten more cover the hillside near the resort’s lobby, restaurant and bar. Samir Galindo says 20 of those cabanas have been rebuilt from scratch in the last three years. “The rooms we are building today are 800 square feet and include a 16’x16’ open deck with hammocks and benches,” Samir says. The new larger models—with more storage space, bigger bathrooms and air-conditioning—can accommodate a king-size and double bed, making them perfect for families. Some cabanas are more private and secluded (rooms 27, 30, 40 and 41 are great for honeymooners), while some share a common deck—these are good for groups or couples traveling together. Some of them are perched on the volcanic rock that lines the more-secluded north side of the island, while others jut out over the calm lagoon on the resort-facing side. “[Potential visitors] see the photo of the cabin over the water, and that’s what draws them,” says Samir. Know Any Billionaires? Updating the resort has been critical for attracting new visitors, and management has been able to stay in step with changing dynamics on the island by spending a lot of time, effort and money. “It’s not good for our expenses,” says Samir. If AKR is to go to the next level, it may be without the Galindo family, says Haydee Galindo. The resort is up for sale with a $52 million price tag (see listing at www.roatanlife.com). “The price is not negotiable,” she says, citing a skyrocketing cost of living on the island due to among other things an influx of foreign investment. “We’re not trying to sell it as soon as possible. We aren’t in a position where we have to sell. But if it is sold, we want someone who really wants to invest in something we have put hard work and dedication into. It’s a bittersweet decision, but at the same time, we are looking out for the future.” For questions and VIP requests, contact Haydee Galindo, director of Bahia Tours, Inc., at 800-227-3483 or via e-mail at haydee@bahiatours.com.
