Travel Agent - October 13, 2008 - (Page 70) NEWS IMPACT Princess Onboard Summit Unveils New Tools the Presidential Summit was Lindsay Neil Pearlman, executive vice president and general manager, Ensemble Travel Group in Toronto. “In a day with compressed margins and the ability to earn as much as you possibly can on existing programs,” he says, “any tools that cruise companies or suppliers can provide to help maximize revenue best serve everybody.” Pearlman adds that Ensemble will aggressively communicate with its members about such tools and the earnings opportunities those provide. Alan Buckelew, Princess’ president and CEO, and Carol Marlow, Cunard’s president and managing director, mingled with Pearlman and other top producers onboard. “Alan spent a lot of time talking about how we at Princess are focusing on raising the bar,” Swartz says. “It’s all about aligning every one of your employees to deliver and about out-executing the competition.” Breakout groups covered customer service, marketing, the onboard product and more. CRUISES SUSAN J. YOUNG Aboard for the Princess Presidential Summit are (seated from left) Van and Candace Anderson with America’s Vacation Company; Ralph and Norma Cooper with Bon Voyage Travel; (standing from left) Blaine Lambert with Cruise Holidays of Vancouver; Jan Swartz, SVP sales and customer service Princess and Cunard; Megan Saxon with AAA Arizona; and Brian McLaughlin with TRAVLTIPS COMPLEMENTING PRINCESS CRUISES’ Polar Online—its reservations system—and the Princess Academy—a fullbodied agent training program—is the new website www.onesource cruises.com, a one-stop home for new sales reporting tools for both Princess (www.princess.com) and Cunard Line (www.cunard.com). “It allows the owner/manager to log on at any time of day and see a wealth of management information about how business is tracking by month, by year, by group vs. FIT, by year over year, and by goals and how well the agency is tracking against those goals,” says Jan Swartz, the line’s senior vice CONNECTING YOU For all the latest news on the cruise industry, visit www.travelagentcentral. com/cruises president of sales and customer service. Those tools should help agencies better understand where their business is going. Separately, Swartz says the two brands recently added Group Alert, which sends weekly e-mails to agency owners/managers showing how close their firm is to earning a tour conductor berth and what the estimated value is. These and other programs were outlined for top Princess and Cunard producers during the Presidential Summit onboard Caribbean Princess last month. Approximately 200 trade personnel representing 125 agencies sailed on the cruise from New York; 150 to 160 agencies qualified to attend. For Princess, top producers have more than $1.4 million in annual sales, and for Cunard, more than $200,000. Among those sailing onboard New Developments On the Princess front, Rai Caluori, executive vice president-fleet operations, said that Caribbean Princess, Golden Princess and Star Princess will receive the adultsonly Sanctuary and the lobby Piazza, a combination of café, wine bar and street fest. Star Princess received the additions in September 2008, while Caribbean Princess will receive the makeover in January 2009. Golden Princess will follow next spring. In addition, Caribbean Princess’ casino will move to Deck 7, and the Sterling Steakhouse will move to Deck 6 and become the Crown Grill. Over time, the Sanctuary will be added fleetwide. So will the Movies Under The Stars concept, except on Royal Princess, Pacific Princess and Tahitian Princess. Another discussion highlight was the Princess Alliance and its new direct-mail marketing materials. These are now offered to large Princess accounts and Commodore agencies (those whose employees have completed a certain level of intensive line training). Princess tells agencies when new direct-mail pieces will drop, and agencies add their own messaging. The main question, Swartz says, is: “How do we marry the Princess expertise in creating direct marketing with the power of a co-promotion between travel agencies and our brand?” She adds, “The pieces are beautiful and cost only 55 cents apiece, a rate [agencies] would not be able to achieve on their own. We are challenging our partners with new ways to keep promoting because the worst thing is to hold back [during a tough economy]. It becomes a vicious cycle. If they don’t promote, their sales go down.” With no minimum quantity needed, agencies can experiment with what works in their market. —SUSAN J.
