Travel Agent - October 15, 2007 - (Page SU-cov3) For many, ski/snowboard travel to New England tends to be about much the same things that draw visitors to the region the rest of the year: quaint villages, atmospheric inns, warm welcomes and peaceful contemplation of the countryside. New England is just that much better in winter because there’s the option of adding ski thrills to a stay. Discussion of New England skiing often begins with Killington/Pico, in the southern half of Vermont. With more than 1,000 skiable acres, it’s the only eastern resort that’s comparable in size to its western counterparts. As such, it’s for just about any level of skier, from ample beginner/intermediate terrain all the way up to its famed mogul run, Outer Limits. Due to a large condo supply, Killington is a good choice for families, though its nightlife scene, also makes it a favorite of the young and single. The northern Vermont village of Stowe. with its iconic clapboard church, general stores and a slow pace, might be a little quiet for the jet-set crowd. The ski mountain has a lot of intermediate terrain along with some of a few of the most notoriously difficult doubleblack diamond pistes in the country. Nearby Smuggler’s Notch has a wealth of programs Okemo New England Charm New Englandbound ski/ snowboard travelers are lured by the classic atmosphere and terrain specifically designed for kids and families, and bills itself as a “family resort.” In southern Vermont, consider sending upscale travelers to Stratton, often thought of as the East’s version of Aspen or Deer Valley. Close to the upscale shopping in Manchester, Stratton can be combined with a stay at such classic luxe properties as the Equinox Hotel. Two other resorts, Okemo and Mount Snow, offer a blend of easy trails, family and kids’ programs and solid snowmaking,. GRANDEUR AND GOOD TIMES In New Hampshire’s White Mountains, travelers can relive the past at some of the old, grand hotels of the Northeast: There’s Bretton Woods, home to the famed Mount Washington Hotel and site of plenty of family-oriented, gentle skiing. Another classic property, The Balsams, has its own ski mountain, where families can enjoy skiing as part of an activity-filled stay. Attitash is a good choice for families with a snowboarder or freestyler in their midst. It’s aggressively branded itself as a terrain park destination, and has invested in facilities accordingly. Finally, there’s Maine, where Sunday River offers loads of trails for all ages, while Sugarloaf/USA also boasts great snow and lots of terrain, but may be a bit better for intermediate to advanced skiers, though beginner trails are available. It’s also somewhat remote, but for romantics and others looking for out-of-the way charming options, that can be a bonus. Bretton Woods
