10 | 11 Ski University • Travel Agent While some clients may prefer ski destinations where lots of people like to party and congregate, others long Northern Charms Wyoming, Idaho and Montana offer wide-open spaces and uncrowded, fantastic skiing for more elbow room, vast forests and lots of untracked, untouched snow— much of the classic allure of the American West. They’ll ﬁnd just that a bit off the beaten path in Wyoming, Idaho or Montana might be just the thing. Arguably the resort best known in this triumvirate of states is Wyoming’s Jackson Hole, located in the Teton Mountains close to Grand Teton National Park. Jackson Hole began as (and still is) a great place for experts and wannabes to test their mettle. But for quite some time now the resort has also been seeking to widen its market, and there’s also lots of terrain for beginners and kids. There’s also an easygoing base village that offers a plethora of top-notch hotels, such as Teton Mountain Lodge, Snake River Lodge & Spa, and the Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole. The charming, western-ﬂavored town of Jackson provides more lodging, nightlife and exquisite dining. One of the ﬁrst destination ski resorts in America, Sun Valley, Idaho, was founded in the 1930s by magnate Averell Harriman. It has a classic, upscale feel that combines European and American Western ﬂavors. Its more than 2,000 skiable acres include plenty of skiing for all, although there’s a bit more for intermediates and above than for beginners. Upscale families and groups seeking a Western ﬂavor are the most likely to enjoy Sun Valley, and its plethora of dining options and reﬁned ﬂavor also make it a good choice for couples. Tamarack is a new resort (2004-05 was its ﬁrst season) that’s heavily investing in its infrastructure, and a possibility for clients looking for something new and exciting. WIDE-OPEN SLOPES In Montana, Big Sky also provides comfort for those who never want a crowd or a lift line; its thousands of acres of skiing provide fun for absolutely any skier or snowboarder, and even more has been added with a joint lift ticket with nearby Moonlight Basin. Lots of wide-open slopes are available for beginners, and experts can test themselves on some truly scary chutes off Lone Peak. The resort is situated in a quiet, self-contained village, with upscale hotel, condo and cabin accommodations. Given that, families and couples are the most logical Big Sky guests. Whiteﬁsh Mountain Resort at Big Mountain also typically gets lots of snow and competes for some of the same clientele as Big Sky. Located near Whiteﬁsh and Glacier National Park, it has plenty of varied terrain as well as a base village, with condo and hotel properties, that is being expanded and redeveloped to better serve destination visitors.
