If a client is looking for a place to have a “ski safari”— staying in one or more places while skiing a different resort every day— then Lake Tahoe can’t be beat. There are ski areas to suit many different tastes, and some provide gorgeous vistas of Lake Tahoe’s deep-blue waters. For the latter advantage, consider Heavenly, a stunning mountain resort perched on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. The California Vibe Nightlife, gorgeous scenery and a mellow atmosphere are the highlights of California/ Nevada Heavenly is distinctive for two major reasons: First, few ski areas provide such jaw-dropping lake/mountain views; and second, its nightlife is nonpareil in the ski world, as it straddles the California/Nevada border and provides close-up access to casinos such as Harveys and Harrahs. Families are also drawn here, often staying at such family-friendly properties as the Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe, steps from the base area. Other major Tahoe resorts include the North Shore’s Squaw Valley USA, home to the 1960 Winter Olympics. Though anyone can ski Squaw, those with a bit of skiing proﬁciency usually enjoy it the most, as its steeps are notoriously…steep. Squaw has been improved in recent years by the addition of a mixed-use base village, providing lodging, dining and nightlife options. There’s also an on-mountain skating rink and museum. Another North Shore resort enjoying a new base village is Northstar-at-Tahoe. The ski area has lots of gentle, wide-open runs, as well as some steeper, fast trails for cruising, and is a great choice for families with a snowboarder or two. The North Shore’s Alpine Meadows is well known for its off-trail skiing. Also on the South Shore, Kirkwood is an off-the-beaten path spot with lots of terrain for everyone; for the hardcore skier, it’s a paradise. Those looking for a bit more rough-hewn experience will ﬁnd it here, as Kirkwood prides itself on not being as slick as its neighbors. And Sierra-at-Tahoe is another big resort serving up many trails for all ability levels, and shouldn’t be overlooked as a place for a family to spend the day while visiting Lake Tahoe. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Just a few hours to the south of Tahoe, Mammoth lives up to its name by providing more than 3,500 skiable acres, making it one of the largest in the country. As such, it’s one of those places where a wide range of skiers, particularly families, groups and couples, can go and have an enjoyable time for days and days—but make sure clients realize just how big it is. A recently added base village has helped provide a much-needed focal point for dining, lodging and shopping. Lots of runs are available for all ability levels and, true to California, snowboarding is very popular here. Heavenly Mammoth
