Travel Agent Comp - (Page 32) cruises cast as a triBute tO HerOes Past, the interiors of the Carnival Valor honor such historical luminaries as George Washington, Winston Churchill, even fictional characters like Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. Reminders of each hero dot the rooms and public spaces encased in the 110,000-ton, 2,974-guest ship, Carnival’s largest ship based out of the Port of Miami. Since Carnival’s inception in 1972, its aim has been to provide the masses with around-the-clock fun, hence the “Fun Ship” moniker that still promotes the Carnival fleet today. We got to bask in the fun on a recent 10-day Eastern Caribbean voyage out of Miami. Heart Of It All- Anticipation mounts on the gangway as you enter the ship. The Carnival Valor grabs you right away as you step forward into its vertical atrium shaded in dark reds and purples set next to translucent elevators, each climbing upward toward a backlit American flag. That ornateness sets the tone for the rest of the ship. The Carnival Valor is really a tale of two ships: one operating during the day, one at night. During daytime hours, particularly when the sun is beaming, most of the ship’s clientele is strewn about Lido deck or deck 9, which consists of two pools surrounded by a sea of lounge chairs. An assortment of food options also peppers the deck, including a grill, pizzeria and Rosie’s restaurant, which is the ship’s casual dining buffet restaurant. While the two main dining halls, Washington and Lincoln, are more than capable, Travel Agent implores you to take advantage of Scarlett’s Supper Club on deck 10. Though a reservation is required along with a $30 fee per person, you may not find a better meal anywhere, even on land. Patterned like a New York steakhouse, the restaurant, whose chefs have studied under the auspices of famed French chef Georges Blanc, offers sea fare and premium steaks. Although, there’s a fee, but be mindful that you can order whatever and as much of what you want. Wine is extra, but the entire experience is a bargain. Scarlett’s Supper Club hostess is Anna Jurcovicova, who will gladly revel your table with any and all information regarding the restaurant. The action then heats up inside the ship once the sun goes down. The Promenade deck (deck 5) is littered with people—young and old—as they parade through what the ship calls King Boulevard. Turn one way and you’ll be entranced by the melodic sounds of the ONbOaRd Carnival’s new Ship Whether it’s pampering yourself in the spa or taking part in a fun-spirited belly-flop contest, there’s something for everyone’s taste. 32 | TravelAgent september 24, 2007 by DaviD eisen
