H E L L I S A B R O K E N H E A R T a dad. I called him one time when I was going through a breakup. I was depressed and sad, and Al started talking about God and religion, just for a few seconds. Then he apologized and told me he didn’t want to force his beliefs on me, but if I ever wanted to talk about it, he wanted me to feel that was open to me. I thought that was the most loving and kind thing Al could do for me at a difficult time. Al and his wife, Terri, bought me a Bible, and I’ve read quite a bit of it. There are tremendous lessons for life that you can learn from it. I am not a religious person, per se, but I feel a deep sense of spirituality in my life and connection to people, the world around me and to what is right and wrong or good and bad. I think a lot of the Bible stories are metaphors, but over the years there have been many powerful people who’ve used religion in the wrong way, and these things have been distorted. I don’t know that I entirely believe the theory of evolution either. I do believe we are spiritual beings, connected by love and disconnected by misunderstanding that we all want the same things for ourselves and others. If God came down and sat next to me, then I’d have my proof of his existence. Until that day happens, I can’t say who’s right or wrong. 156 Al Merrick is one of my favorite people, and I truly love him like Many different groups of the same religions can have slightly or tremendously differing beliefs, and they all believe they’re right, which shows me that they could be all wrong. When you can truly accept everyone for who they are, regardless of their beliefs, that’s when you’re getting somewhere. There’s not a thing in life we don’t judge. I feel I’m guided by my conscience, and I search for the meaning in that. Some of my closest friends think I’m too complex in that regard, maybe questioning too many things instead of accepting them, but that’s my personality. It’s what makes me who I am, and maybe it’s also the reason I excel at what I do. I question absolutely everything. I think of every angle and try to see things from different perspectives. The real healing in life comes through having awareness of other people, no matter who they are or where they’ve come from. Even Jesus supposedly hung out with prostitutes and murderers and saw past what they did into who they were. That’s spirituality to me. Magazine shoot, Cocoa Beach.
